Arte Gorda
On 18.07.2025, we held our first exhibition at Everybody’s Playground with the work of Rebeca Ventura and her project Arte Gorda.
Rebeca set an incredibly high standard for our first exhibition. She was a dream to work with, and her work was loved by everyone who saw it.
Reclaiming historical narratives in art history through her “Fat Re-interpretations”, Rebeca takes compositions and figures from Greek mythology and art history and reimagining them in larger bodies, giving visibility and a voice to fat people within narratives where they have historically been excluded.
I find her work incredibly contemporary precisely because she engages with these historical narratives. At a time when political and cultural conversations around bodies are becoming increasingly restrictive, her work feels particularly powerful. She challenges the idea of whose bodies are allowed to occupy space, be represented, and be celebrated.
I loved her work because of its authenticity, but also because of the bravery she showed in telling her story. Rebeca was open and honest about her own experiences with body image and about dealing with other people’s projections and reactions online. It was an absolute gift to go through this process with her and to hear her speak so openly about her work and experiences.
We held both a vernissage and finissage, with Rebeca travelling back and forth from Berlin to hold the space, meet visitors and speak about her work. It was wonderful to see people engage with the exhibition and to have the opportunity to hear directly from the artist.
Rebeca has become a beloved part of the Everybody’s Playground community, and we still love telling everyone who will listen how great she is!
So, in that same spirit, we highly recommend checking out her Instagram and website below and discovering more of her work.
